I have long admired the work of Maisey and Dawn from Me Oh My Crochet. This mother and daughter team create adorable designs using bright colours, the granny square/strip style and a ton of creativity! Every time they pop up on my Instagram feed, I am sucked into scrolling their feed (page?) and seeing what other cute designs they have. And I’m always delighted by the creations of little bags, trinket trays, seasonal items and their amazing eye for colour and detail.
Inspired by the young people in their lives, Maisey and her mom Dawn stumbled into becoming crochet designers quite by accident. Aren’t we lucky they did!
Both have backgrounds that really make them stand out as crafters, designers and teachers to other makers.
Interview
- Can you describe how you first became a pattern designer?
Oh Me Oh My Crochet came about after my mom, Dawn, entered her granny era. She was making baby blankets for her first grandchild and all the other babies in our lives. I was intrigued, so I picked up a hook and yarn myself, and it quickly developed into such a wonderful hobby that both of us could bond over. When we started, pattern writing or even a crochet business had not even entered our minds. Once they found out we could crochet, a couple of family members had a special request for a mushroom-inspired bag and we decided to give it a go! They absolutely loved them, and when we posted them on social media, it turned out others liked them too! We ended up selling our finished bags, but recognized that a pattern would be valuable to other crocheters. Now, we strive to create original patterns for anything and everything that inspires us! We both have backgrounds that have helped in pattern designing and writing. My mom has experience in technical writing and photography, while I have a background in photography, graphic design, and a full-time job as a teacher.
- What keeps you inspired and designing?
The response and encouragement from other crocheters has kept us inspired and motivated to continue designing. Repeat customers also give us the confidence that we must be doing something right! When we started crocheting, our inspiration came from the little ones in our family. We wanted to make things for them first and foremost. As they’ve grown, we’ve continued to think of new designs for them. Seeing how delighted the eldest little one gets after receiving a new handmade item makes us melt! It was especially heartwarming to hear her tell others that her gift was “handmade and couldn’t be bought in stores!” at her 3rd birthday party. As a high school teacher, my students have always given me insight into what’s trending and this has even further broadened our scope of designs.
- How would you describe your patterns and designs?
Our designs are simple, yet fun. We are certainly a sucker for colorful creations, so more than anything, our designs are influenced by color.
- What do you hope to accomplish with each of your patterns?
Our goal is to create patterns that people can enjoy making at any skill level; patterns that people can adapt and personalize through color or pattern options. We love sharing patterns that can be used for multiple projects and purposes – especially practical ones.
- How have you grown and changed as a designer over the years?
We still consider ourselves new designers, and we’re constantly learning and growing. When we look at our first pattern compared to our most recent ones, we have improved in our detail and we’ve also changed the types of patterns we’re making.
- What tools do you like to use best?
Our favorite hooks are hands down the Clover Amour hooks and our favorite yarn to work with is DK/3 or worsted/4 weight cotton.

Final Thoughts
It was so awesome getting to hear the thoughts of Maisey on the crochet journey from makers into designers and I love that they strive to make their patterns ones that all makers can try their hand at hooking up. I really hope you love their creations as much as I do, they definitely are fun and functional and I love it when designers are not afraid to use colour.
