Last spring I began a shawl pattern that was inspired. For me, I mean. I had never attempted to design something so complex before. Designing patterns isn’t just about being creative and knowing how to crochet. It’s also about a vision and bringing that vision to life—and doing the work brings it all to life. Sometimes that is realitively straightforward, other times it’s a bit more complex—as this shawl pattern proved to be. Crochet, you see, sometimes involves math (hence the word pattern) and math and I are not exactly on good terms. I just don’t see the logic and pattern in mathematics. And I often confuse myself. And miscount. You get the idea.
When I started this project, the pattern was working up beautifully. Then, it kinda changed on me and I wasn’t sure why but I liked where it was going and then it was losing all sense of a pattern. To be quite honest, if it had just been a piece for me, I would have made it work. But since I was determined that what I had in mind was a design I wanted to share, I knew to needed to fix the bedlam that was my pattern.
So I frogged. And frogged some more. And frogged more…nearly all the way to the beginning. And this time, I kept more careful notes and did some math (with the help of my mathematical hubby) and the pattern worked up more logically. It was infuriating and exhilarating at the same time. And from all of that math (which really wasn’t a lot, let’s be honest) we now have the Sweet Dreams Shawl. Which I truly do love and am super proud of!
This shawl pattern has proved to me that I can design anything I want to—if I want to. I have the skills. So I can’t let imposter syndrome get ahold of me in the future.
Like I said, that was last spring. I continue to be super proud of this project, of the amount of time and work I put into it, and how it turned out. But I had to put off releasing the pattern until now because I needed it tested and I couldn’t take the time to test it until more recently. I was in a big season of designing and crocheting, but life suddenly spiralled me onto a totally different path. But today, I am bringing you the Sweet Dreams Shawl at long last!
Sweet Dreams Shawl Pattern
Now that you’ve made it through the above back story of this shawl, let’s get into the pattern! Made with Lionbrand’s Truboo yarn, this shawl has the most perfect drape. Part of that is of course, the yarn, as I chose it specifically for this project because of it’s incredible drape. But the drape also comes in part from the construction of the shawl, with rows of open stitches.

Despite this pattern challenging my non-mathematical brain, it won’t be hard for a beginner to hook this up. The stitch pattern is really simple, and you’ll likely find crocheting this super soothing. I know I did—and I spent tons of time crocheting this over and over again!
